Being depressed and having depression is different. when something happens in life like the situation in hand like death in the family of course can cause you to be depressed. everyone experiences being depressed at least one point in life. but when you are depressed for months on end and ot affects ur life day by day though then its considered depression.
There are various stages of grief, and the last one is often considered to be able to reattach to something new. so normally a normal loss of an elderly relative is not a shock, and normally there are new things for someone younger to attach to and put their emotional energy into. The problem comes when what has been lost is so huge. Like the mother who loses a child (especially an only child). It is very very hard (impossible) to find something at least as strong to attach to... and that is the critical issue where many people can become "stuck".. but if you can recognise this, then maybe you can look to how you can find something very strong to reattach to for the future.
Not all depression comes from bad things, it's a medical issue like diabetes except of the brain. It definitely needs help with either supplements or prescription from a trained Dr.
