Where do Stem Cells for scientific research come from?
"The Healing Miracle" is an excellent documentary series on stem cell therapy.
At this time, there is a process that your blood is taken, run through a centrifuge and separated filtered and the stem cells are harvested from you and used in you. It is still in the experimental stage in the U.S. but Europe has been doing it for over five years. They are using it to rebuild cartilage in shoulders, hips and knees. The hope is to be able to use it to repair the vertebrae discs in the spinal column. The cost in Europe is running around $1400.00 a treatment and it is depending on the extent of damage as to how many treatments are needed. It is hoped that they will be able to adapt and use the same type of treatment to repair Heart damage and other organic illness.
I personally feel that there are some ethical issues, but am in support of this research. I am however afraid of this being used in an "unethical manner". Similar to Einstein's reservations with nuclear energy, the technology is amazing, as long as it is used for the intended outcome of curing / eradicating disease. Sadly we all know that this will not be the case moving forward, when the military industrial complex gets their way.
It is true You can donate an aborted foetus to stem cell research though, but only after a certain stage. Prior to 14 weeks, it's too small.
Stem cells can also come from your own body but they can only be used to treat the area where they come from. The great thing about stems cells grown in the lab, or taken from a foetus, is they're not developed yet. They don't have a purpose, so they can be used for any part of the body.
